Labor leader Josh Willie has announced his new shadow cabinet, with recently ousted leader Dean Winter taking the role of Shadow Treasurer.

The revamped opposition team will focus on holding the government to account following what Willie described as “broken promises” by the Liberals.

Janie Finlay has been appointed Deputy Leader with multiple portfolio responsibilities including Energy, Environment and Primary Industries.

“My Deputy Leader, Janie Finlay, has already hit the ground running and will make a tremendous contribution to our team and to Tasmania in the role,” Willie said.

Dean Winter takes on the role of Shadow Treasurer, bringing experience from his previous work in Treasury.

“The budget is the biggest issue facing Tasmania right now and Dean brings a strong background and experience working in economics and finance,” Willie said.

Winter has been taking time away since the party lost its no-confidence motion against the Liberals in parliament last week.

“Dean Winter has taken some time off. He’s out of state with his family and I think he needed to do that. He’s had a huge workload and a very challenging time and he’ll be back next week raring to go,” Willie explained.

Ella Haddad will serve as Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Assembly, with Willie citing her talents as “well suited” to working collaboratively across the chamber in the minority parliament.

“There is a resolute team behind me that needs to do the work. We need to earn the trust back of Tasmanians,” Willie said.

He said he is confident in his team’s ability to present “a viable alternative” he claims Tasmanians “are crying out for.”
