A development application has been submitted for a new $90 million mental health facility in Launceston, marking a significant step forward to improve mental health outcomes in the state’s north.
The Northern Mental Health Precinct, to be located at 52 Frankland Street, forms part of the broader Launceston General Hospital Precinct Masterplan and will replace the current Northside Unit.
The development will feature a 30-bed mental health inpatient unit, a Recovery College, Safe Haven, dedicated car park and a link bridge connecting it to the Launceston General Hospital.
Health Minister Bridget Archer said the facility will transform mental health care in the region.

“The precinct will provide a contemporary, home-like environment for immediate support, brief interventions, education and assistance in navigating services,” Archer said.
A key focus of the facility is to reduce pressure on emergency services while providing better patient outcomes.

“Importantly, it will improve mental health outcomes by enabling timely access to care and reducing avoidable Emergency Department presentations,” Archer said.
The state government has collaborated with clinicians, stakeholders and community members to develop the design.
The final concept incorporates feedback gathered to deliver optimal results for staff, patients and visitors.
Site preparation works are currently underway to be completed in early 2026.
