Burnie’s long-awaited new courts complex is a step closer, with plans for the $86.5 million project now with the local council for approval.
A development application has been lodged with Burnie City Council for the facility at 100–106 Wilson Street in the CBD, Attorney-General Guy Barnett confirmed today.
“Not only will the Burnie Courts Complex deliver modern and fit-for-purpose facilities, it will also create and support local jobs,” he said.
The new building will replace the ageing courts at 38 Alexander Street, which have been in use since the early 1970s and are struggling to meet current needs.

It will include one Supreme Court and three magistrates’ courts, up from the two magistrates’ courts currently in operation, to cater for growing demand in the north and north-west.
The Department of Justice has finished its tender process for site works, with a contractor expected to be named in the coming weeks.

Demolition is scheduled to begin in September and wrap up by the end of the year.
Located opposite Burnie Police Station and close to other key services, the new complex is set to start construction in the first half of 2026.
The Department of Justice says it should open in late 2027.
