A search operation has intensified in Tasmania’s Mount Field National Park for a 30-year-old walker who has been missing in freezing, snow-covered terrain for more than 48 hours.

Daryl Fong was last heard from around 3am on Sunday when he texted a friend saying he planned to seek shelter and camp overnight in the park.

Police were alerted on Monday afternoon when Fong failed to return, prompting an immediate helicopter search that was unsuccessful in locating him.

Search teams are battling challenging winter conditions, with snow depth reaching up to one metre in some areas.

Four Tasmania Police Search and Rescue officers and an Ambulance Tasmania wilderness paramedic were deployed to the park late yesterday.

Additional police and SES search teams, along with wilderness paramedics, joined the operation this morning, with the rescue helicopter returning to continue aerial searches.

Authorities say Fong has some experience in outdoor activities and may be carrying appropriate equipment and clothing for the conditions.

Police have released a photograph of Fong as part of a public appeal, showing him in similar clothing to what he’s believed to be wearing during his hike.
