A prominent Tasmanian developer has unveiled plans to transform vacant South Launceston land into social and affordable housing.
The proposed development by Errol Stewart of JMC Property Group at 9 Rose Lane features two three-story buildings, each containing 28 units.
To be built on a former landfill site, both buildings will offer identical configurations with 16 two-bedroom and 12 one-bedroom apartments.
The proposal also includes parking for residents, with 44 car spaces and 20 bicycle spaces for building one and 50 car spaces and 20 bicycle spaces for building two.

“The proposal has been architecturally designed to maximise the amenity and function of the site,” according to the application documents submitted to the city council.
The project has already gained support from Community Housing Limited, with State Manager Jamie Round saying they commend any efforts to address the current housing crisis.

“This issue is not an isolated issue for all levels of government only and will require a collegial effort from all areas,” he said in a letter with the application.
“Community Housing Limited applauds the JMC Group for recognising the urgent need to provide more affordable and social housing supply on the ground and would encourage them to pursue their interest in this area.”
The application is currently open for public comment until March 3.
