Police say the man lost control of the car as he negotiated the roundabout on the wrong side of the road before crashing into the light pole.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage for over an hour, eventually being cut free by the Tasmania Fire and Ambulance services.

He was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Crash investigation and forensic teams are continuing to investigate the crash, with Police appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the silver Commodore before the incident.
