Motorists travelling between Kingston and Hobart should expect delays of up to 40 minutes this weekend as roadworks close lanes on the Southern Outlet.

The resurfacing work will shut both Hobart-bound lanes for up to 10 minutes at a time on Saturday and Sunday, from 7am to 6pm each day.

The works cover roughly 1.5 kilometres leading to the Olinda Grove overpass at Tolmans Hill.

Drivers are being advised to use the Channel Highway as an alternative route or allow up to 50 minutes total travel time between Kingston and Hobart during working hours.

The project marks the final stage of resurfacing on the Hobart-bound lanes as part of annual road maintenance.

Authorities said the work could not be completed at night because it requires warmer conditions and appropriate lighting for worker safety.

“While we understand delays can be frustrating, we have scheduled the works to take advantage of lower traffic volumes during the summer school holiday period,” the Department of State Growth said.

A reduced speed limit will apply throughout the works due to changed road surface conditions and loose stones.

Overnight line-marking work took place earlier this week in preparation for the resurfacing, with crews working from 7pm to 6am between Tuesday and Thursday.

Motorists are reminded to follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs and keep to posted speed limits.

Works are expected to wrap up by 6pm on Sunday.
