A boatload of highly anticipated feed and fodder has arrived on drought-stricken King Island after being held up on the mainland for weeks.

The Eastern Line Shipping vessel carrying hundreds of bales of hay arrived at Grassy Harbor on Sunday afternoon, bringing much-needed relief to the island’s farmers.

President of TasFarmers Ian Sauer said the efforts from everyone involved in getting the crucial feed onto the island had left farmers ‘over the moon’.

“The efforts of the ‘Need for Feed’ team in delivering feed and the kindness of Victorian farmers … has not gone unnoticed,” Sauer said.

“Crucially TasPorts waiving stevedoring and port fees are instrumental in making this possible, ensuring that the much-needed supplies reach our farmers without additional financial burden.”

“Freight supplier Eastern Line Shipping must also be congratulated for ensuring the timely and efficient transport after the Ottaway shire blockade of feed.”

Locals gathered at the port on Sunday to witness the arrival of the boat, which came in under a rainbow and to a warm welcome from the Lions Club of King Island, who provided food for the occasion.

Primary Industries Minister Jane Howlett said the state government was “pleased to have assisted” by meeting the costs of shipping from the Port of Welshpool to King Island.

“This donation of stockfeed is a great example of the help Need for Feed Australia has been providing thousands of farmers in need since it began in 2006,” she said.

“To all the volunteers and supporters for all their hard work, thank you.”

The arrival of the hay is particularly welcome given that February and March of this year were the driest on record for King Island in over 100 years, according to their 114-year-old rain statistics.
