Police dog operations targeting anti-social behaviour in Glenorchy have resulted in multiple arrests and drug seizures during targeted patrols yesterday afternoon.
The operation, part of Tasmania Police’s ongoing efforts to reduce retail crime in the area, saw officers conduct searches on 12 individuals, with several found in possession of illegal substances and weapons.
Sergeant Iain Shepherd from the Tasmania Police Dog Handlers Unit said the patrols uncovered methylamphetamine and cannabis, along with three people carrying knives or other weapons.
“A 48-year-old man from Bridgewater wanted on stealing charges was located and interviewed and another 48-year-old man from Bridgewater was arrested for consuming alcohol and engaging in disorderly conduct,” Sergeant Shepherd said.
The second man’s troubles escalated after being released on bail.
“The man was bailed before being arrested again a short time later for attempted stealing,” Shepherd said.
“He was banned from entering all Coles stores for one year and will appear in court at a later date.”
The operation also resulted in five people receiving formal directions to leave the Glenorchy CBD due to their behaviour.
Several youths found with drugs during the operation will be handled through diversion programs rather than the court system.
Police have thanked community members for their support during the operation, which forms part of the force’s focus on curbing retail crime and anti-social conduct in the municipality.
