A teenage driver is facing serious penalties after being caught travelling at extreme speed on a Tasmanian highway while allegedly under the influence of drugs.
Police intercepted the 19-year-old Margate man travelling at 160km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Southern Outlet near Kingston on Friday night.
The P2 licence holder was stopped by Southern Road Police officers at about 9:40pm on October 3 after his vehicle was detected speeding shortly after passing the Lea junction.
Police say the provisional driver also returned a positive result for an illicit drug during roadside testing.
The teen’s vehicle was immediately clamped for 28 days.

When he appears in court, the driver is expected to face a driving disqualification period and fines of at least $1,178.
“This incident highlights the serious risks posed by speeding and drug-impaired driving, particularly among inexperienced drivers,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.
“Tasmania Police remain committed to reducing fatal and serious crashes by enforcing road safety laws and promoting responsible driving behaviour.”
