A Tasmanian man pulled over for allegedly drinking a beer while driving was behind the wheel of a ute that was full of empty alcohol cans, police say.
The 35-year-old from Dover, in the state’s south, was stopped on Wednesday and found to be nearly five times over the legal blood alcohol limit.
Police said it was 3:45am when officers intercepted the man driving a white ute on the rural Darcy Link road at Strathblane.
“On stopping the vehicle, police allege the driver was seen actively drinking a beer and the cabin of his vehicle was littered with empty alcohol cans,” police said.
He allegedly refused to take a roadside breath test and was taken to a police station, where he blew 0.232 – nearly five times the legal limit of 0.05.

Huonville Police Sergeant Simon Ward said the man is now facing a mandatory two-year driving ban and has been bailed to appear in court.
“Police can be anywhere, at any time. If you choose to break the law, you will get caught,” Ward said.
“All motorists need to make responsible decisions. Drink-driving puts lives at risk.”
