Water restrictions will stay in place across Tasmania’s east coast and Flinders Island, as the state continues to face drier-than-usual conditions this June.

Stage one restrictions will remain in effect for Orford and Triabunna, where they’ve been in place since early April. On Lady Barron, residents are being asked to keep an eye on their water use.

TasWater’s Liz Hafner said the restrictions were necessary due to declining levels at Prosser Dam and average-to-above average water demand since January.

“Tasmania is currently much drier than average for this time of year,” Hafner said.

The water authority is keeping a close watch on local conditions and says restrictions will be lifted once there is consistent rainfall and stronger river flows along the east coast.

Some rain was recorded overnight, with more forecast across parts of the state in the coming weeks.

“There is a common misconception that Tasmania has an inexhaustible supply of water,” Hafner said.

“But that supply is vulnerable to the changing climate and our state’s growing population.”
