Updated 10:20pm, Thursday October 29: Two people are in hospital with serious injuries tonight following a serious crash that shut down the East Derwent Highway.
The road through Old Beach was blocked for several hours of Tuesday following the three-vehicle crash.
Police were called to the collision involving a white Toyota Hilux towing a box trailer, a grey Mazda CX-3 and a white Nissan Navara near Jetty Road around 5:20pm.
Initial investigations suggest that the Nissan, traveling westbound, veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with the eastbound Toyota and Mazda.
The 43-year-old male driver of the Navara and the 52-year-old female driver of the Mazda sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital.
The 20-year-old driver and 24-year-old passenger of the Hilux escaped the crash unharmed.
Police say investigations are in the early stages but it appears “inattention” may have been a contributing factor.
Earlier: The East Derwent Highway at Old Beach has been closed in both directions following a multi-vehicle crash.
Police say Jetty Road and Baskerville Road are being used as diversions for the highway closure.
Northbound traffic is being diverted via Jetty Road, while southbound traffic is being sent down Baskerville Road.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area if possible.
Details of any injuries or the number of vehicles involved in the crash are yet to be released.
