Elderly man dies in hospital day after serious ATV crash on West Coast beach

An 81-year-old man has died after an ATV crash on a remote West Coast beach on Saturday morning.

The all-terrain vehicle rolled at Macquarie Heads beach, near Strahan, about 11:15am yesterday.

The man, from Tasmania’s east coast, was a passenger.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said the ATV “crashed and rolled on the beach before landing at the water’s edge”.

Members of the public discovered the vehicle partially submerged in the water and called emergency services.

The man was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital with critical injuries but died early on Sunday morning.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones,” the spokesperson said.

The 36-year-old West Coast man who was driving the ATV suffered serious injuries and remains in the Royal Hobart Hospital in a stable condition.

The cause of the crash is not yet known. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
