An elderly tourist has died in Tasmania’s remote south-west while hiking with a group of three overnight.
The 72-year-old from Canberra was exploring the Mount Anne area when the group, all believed to be in their 70s, became separated prior to 7:30pm on Tuesday.
Emergency services, including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, were called to the scene, along with search and rescue ground team members.
While the helicopter successfully located the man’s body and backpack at the base of Mount Anne on Tuesday night, crews faced challenges in retrieving him due to rugged terrain.
Police say it is expected the helicopter will be used to extract the man’s body today.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” they said.
“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”
