A tiny Tasmanian devil weighing just over 100 grams has been given a second chance at life after his mother was attacked by a dog.

The young devil, named ‘Flood’, was tucked away safely in his mother’s pouch during the attack and protected from the worst of it.

However, as the mother devil fled, both Flood and her sibling were dropped from her pouch.

“Luckily, somebody saw this happen and managed to scoop up the youngsters,” Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary said.

“The other sibling sadly didn’t survive the attack, but [Flood] managed to get away with only a superficial wound.”

“He has since been placed in the expert care of a registered wildlife rehabilitator who will raise him until he is ready for release.”

Tasmanian devils are the largest carnivorous marsupials in the world and are native only to the island state.

They are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to a facial tumour disease that has decimated their populations.
