An entire island, complete with its own penguin colony, is for sale on Tasmania’s east coast.
Currently home to a $3,000-a-night luxury retreat, the 6,750 square metre Picnic Island, near Wineglass Bay and the town of Coles Bay, will soon be sold for a figure believed to be around $5 million.
Owner Clem Newton-Brown says the island, which has been in his family for almost 20 years, is all set up and ready for off-grid living.
“Over the summer months it is as good as anything you will find in the Mediterranean with crystal clear water and abundant seafood – crayfish, abalone, mussels, squid, flathead can all be caught off the island,” he told the AFR.

“The island is no less special during winter where you can get some incredible crisp and still days in between hunkering down with a bottle of wine by the suspended fireplace, keeping an eye out for passing whales.”
Newton-Brown is selling Picnic Island because “logistically it’s become too difficult to run” from Melbourne.

He expects the buyer will “more than likely” be someone from overseas who is wanting a private retreat for personal use or a tourism visionary who wants to build an aquatic and island nature experience.
Earlier this year, Ram Island at Little Swanport hit the market, alongside Vansittart Island off Cape Barron Island in the Bass Strait.
