20 motorists will face court after being caught drug driving during a police blitz on Tasmanian roads over the Australia Day long weekend.
Acting Inspector Luke Negri said drug driving remained a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes in the state.
“… Motorists should expect ongoing enforcement,” he said.
Police also nabbed seven drink drivers across the district, including a 51-year-old Eugenana woman who returned a reading of 0.250 – five times the legal limit.
She was charged with drink driving and failing to stop after a crash and was remanded in custody.
A 34-year-old Queensland man recorded 0.192, while a 49-year-old man received a two-year disqualification after failing a breath test and refusing to comply with police directions.
Speeding proved another headache for police, with 152 infringements issued in the past week alone.
A 35-year-old East Devonport man was caught travelling at 117km/h in a 60km/h zone on Monday.
His car was clamped for 28 days and he was hit with a $1,178.75 fine, six demerit points and a four-month licence disqualification.
A 30-year-old Beauty Point man was also detected doing 100km/h in a 40km/h zone in Narawntapu National Park on Saturday.
Inspector Negri said seatbelt use was also on police radar, with five people caught unrestrained during a one-hour operation in Smithton on Monday.
“Seatbelts are one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a crash,” he said.
“There’s no excuse for not wearing one. These are entirely preventable offences and police will continue targeting this behaviour.”
