Equality Tasmania has launched a campaign demanding the immediate scrapping of the state government’s conversion practices bill.
The draft bill, which was released late last year with the aim of banning conversion practices in the state, is now being deemed as “worse than useless” by Equality Tasmania.
Equality Tasmania spokesperson, Rodney Croome said the bill has numerous exemptions that, in their view, could encourage rather than prevent conversion practices.
“Given the Government isn’t listening to survivors it’s time to take our message to the people,” Croome said.
“I encourage everyone who opposes conversion practices to sign the Open Letter and share the videos on our campaign page.”
Conversion practices survivor Bronwyn Larkins said the bill shows more protection for conversion practitioners than for survivors.
“It mocks the great emotional effort we expended telling our personal stories,” Larkins said.
Attorney-General Guy Barnett has assured that all feedback will be thoroughly considered to achieve the best possible outcome.
The state government’s consultation period for the draft bill ends on February 16.
