The Mayor of the Derwent Valley has thanked staff, evacuees and neighbouring councils for their support during the recent flood emergency.
On Thursday afternoon, Michelle Dracoulis said the council’s primary evacuation centre at the Sports Centre on Derwent Terrace in New Norfolk had now closed.
“Thank you DVC council staff for your efforts in setting up and running this centre over this past challenging week,” she said.
“Thank you to evacuees who accessed the centre patiently and respectfully, despite the anxiety and uncertainty of the unfolding flood event.”
She also acknowledged the support of staff from neighbouring councils, saying their assistance was crucial in filling the 24/7 roster.
The Bureau of Meteorology has since downgraded flood warnings to minor as river levels gradually fall.
However, the BOM has warned that cold fronts are expected to bring moderate falls to northern and western Tasmania in the coming days.
“This may lead to renewed river rises in some parts from tomorrow, depending on where the rain falls,” a spokesperson said.
