An extra $4 million has been poured into the refurbishment of Launceston’s Silverdome, bringing the total project value to $12 million.

The enhanced funding package will deliver expanded seating capacity, replay screens, a new floor system and improved food and beverage facilities.

Sports and Events Minister Nick Duigan said the upgrades will modernise the facility for both elite and community sports.

The project is scheduled for completion before the JackJumpers’ season opener in the next NBL season.

Silverdome upgrades have been given $12 million by the state government

“This is extra funding for extra scope to deliver those upgrades that are required for this venue to be NBL broadcast standard,” Duigan said.

“It’s an important day in the long and storied life of the Silverdome and as a government, we’re really pleased to be able to invest in this facility.”

Stadiums Tasmania will manage the Silverdome

The transfer of venue management to Stadiums Tasmania, which will oversee both the Silverdome and UTAS Stadium, has been welcomed by Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood.

“We, as a council, can get back to further focusing on initiatives like the NTCA ground and looking at how we can further invest into the future of sport, but also the connection that comes from a community point of view,” he said.

“We all have special memories of concerts, graduations, sports events and performances held at the Silverdome over the last few decades and I know everyone will be as excited as I am to see the results of this important upgrade.”
