Price tags accusing supermarket giants of profiting from cost of living pressures have appeared in stores across Hobart.
The messages, in the form of official price tags with mock slogans, have been planted by the Grassroots Action Network and ‘highlight the disparity’ between profits and the struggles of everyday Tasmanians.
“We’ve made over $1 billion in profits whilst you can’t even afford bread,” a Woolworths tag reads.
In Coles, the group have stuck “We understand that times are tough, and that’s why we pay our CEO over $20,000 a day. That’s the median wage of a Tasmanian before the end of the week” and “We’ve made over $1 billion in profits whilst the price of your food goes up, up, up” tags.
Woolworths and Coles have both faced accusations of price gouging, but have denied the claims.
A $1.62 billion profit in the 12 months to June was posted by Woolworths recently, while Coles recorded a $1.1 billion net profit.
Both supermarket chains claim to be aware of the cost of living pressures and are taking steps to help customers save money, such as offering weekly specials and reducing the price of certain products
