Motorists in the Huon Valley have received a fright this afternoon after some cars displayed a false automated warning alerting of “gunfire on roadway”.

The Traffic Message Channel (TMC) alerts are broadcast by navigation company SUNA using local FM radio transmissions and are displayed in vehicle navigation systems.

The false message this afternoon warned of “gunfire on roadway” for northbound traffic between Glen Huon Road and Lollara Road.

The message is understood to have been sent in error by the navigation company, instead of a real message advising of a detour in place for motorists affected by the crash at Franklin this afternoon.

The crash blocked the Huon Highway just north of Franklin shortly before 2pm, forcing motorists from Geeveston to detour via Judbury and Glen Huon.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson confirmed to Pulse there was no “gunfire” related incident in the Huon Valley area.
