A female prisoner has died while in custody at a Tasmanian correctional facility.
The Tasmania Prison Service confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the death occurred on Monday.
It’s understood the woman was an inmate at the Mary Hutchinson Women’s Prison on Hobart’s eastern shore.
Director of Prisons Narelle Pamplin said the service had extended its condolences to the woman’s loved ones.
“On behalf of the Tasmania Prison Service I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased woman at this difficult time,” she said.
The prison service has declined to release further details about the circumstances of the death.
Pamplin said the matter had been referred to the coroner for examination.
“This is standard practice whenever a death occurs in a corrections environment,” she said.
