An Independent MP is calling for the resignation of Tasmania’s Treasurer over the Spirit of Tasmania infrastructure “stuff-up of monumental proportions”.

Kristie Johnston said Michael Ferguson, who was the Infrastructure Minister until he resigned in August, is responsible for a project that will “continue to cost Tasmanians greatly”.

The new Spirit of Tasmania ferries are delayed, over-budget and without anywhere to dock in Tasmania due to delays related to the construction of new berthing facilities.

“Tasmanians deserve nothing but the highest standards of integrity and honesty from Ministers of the Crown,” Johnston said.

“Minister Ferguson has failed them. The community tell me that they feel let down by him and don’t trust him.”

Johnston said that after considering the evidence presented by former TT-Line Chairman Mike Grainger at a Public Accounts Committee hearing on Tuesday, her concerns about Ferguson’s performance have been “reinforced”.

“Michael Ferguson’s position as a Minister, Treasurer and Deputy Premier is untenable in these circumstances,” she said.

“It is of grave concern to me that he is currently holding the extra responsibility of Acting Premier in the absence of Premier Rockliff.”

“I call on him to resign permanently from Cabinet. If he does not do the right thing, then Premier Rockliff must intervene.”
