Tasmania’s north-west has gained its first wheelchair-accessible nature trail, with upgrades to the Ferndene walking track now complete.

The project has transformed the Ferndene to Thoresby’s Tunnel track into a fully accessible route.

Three new bridges, an elevated boardwalk and a viewing platform have been installed along the banks of McBrides Creek.

Acting parks minister Madeleine Ogilvie said the government was committed to improving access to walking tracks in the Dial Range.

“These upgrades have delivered increased accessibility for people of all abilities to view and participate in this incredible walk,” she said.

Local contractor AJR Construct carried out the works, which included removing sections of the old track.

Accessible pathways now wind through some of Tasmania’s most scenic bushland

The viewing platform provides a starting point for visitors exploring the wider Dial Range Reserves.

The accessible track forms part of a $1.6 million government investment across the reserves.

The funding also includes upgrades to the track linking the summit of Mount Dial to Mount Gnomon.
