Ferry services to Bruny Island have been delayed due to extreme weather conditions, with gusts of over 100km/h hitting Roberts Point on the west of the island.
SeaLink confirmed the latest delays just before 3pm on Tuesday, saying an update would be provided later in the afternoon.
Tasmania Police have advised motorists to be cautious when approaching Bruny Island Neck from either end due to sea spray, water and debris on the road.
Similar conditions are also affecting South Arm Neck.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging, locally destructive winds across most of the state.
For western, southern and eastern Tasmania, northwesterly winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts of around 110km/h are expected.
“Locally destructive northwesterly winds, averaging 60 to 80km/h with peak gusts in excess of 125km/h are likely about elevated terrain and are possible about parts of the East Coast between Swansea and Orford until tonight,” the BOM says.
“Winds are expected to ease about southern and eastern areas tonight behind the cold front.”
“Damaging westerly winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts of around 100km/h are expected to continue about western and northern coasts during Wednesday.”
The BOM has listed areas that may be affected by the weather as Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart.
