McDonald’s is planning to open its fifth Launceston restaurant, with the latest to be built on the former James Nelson site in Mowbray.
The fast-food chain has released plans for the new store on Invermay Road, which will be located within the broader shopping precinct and just down the road from both a KFC and Hungry Jacks outlet.
According to planning documents, the proposed McDonald’s restaurant will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will feature a drive-thru.
The building will have a floor area of 450-square metres and will provide 32 on-site car parking spaces.
“The proposal is consistent with the outcomes of development in Mowbray, with commercial tenancies fronting Invermay Road and neighboured by residential properties to at least one side,” the documents state.
“The existing levels of residential amenity of adjoining residential lots differ from those of properties contained within predominantly residential areas, this is reflected by the levels of traffic, noise and light as well as visual amenity as a result of existing buildings, structures and signage along Invermay Road.”
The site currently contains a significant amount of high-risk asbestos, some of which is in poor to very poor condition and will need to be removed before demolition of the existing buildings can begin.
“The proposal represents a well-considered, modest design that will deliver a new commercial service to the community on an vacant site, improving streetscape interaction through an activated frontage,” the documents state.
The application is open from representations with the Launceston City Council through to December 9, with the application likely to go before councillors early next year.
McDonald’s currently has three operational stores in the north at Invermay, South Launceston and Kings Meadows.
The fast-food giant has approval to build a fourth on the site of a former service station at 345-347 Westbury Road in Prospect Vale.
