Fire devastates historic Low Head Pilot Station

A fire has torn through part of a maritime heritage site in northern Tasmania, with fire crews battling to save a historic cottage at the Low Head Pilot Station near George Town.

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from one of the guest houses this afternoon as firefighters worked desperately to control the flames.

The heritage-listed building, which dates back to 1820s, is feared destroyed as crews faced significant challenges accessing fires that had spread to the roof.

Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause of the blaze, nor what the total cost of the damage is.

The Low Head Pilot Station holds significant historical importance as Australia’s oldest and longest continuously active pilot station, having been established in 1805.

The maritime heritage site serves as both a working facility and tourist attraction.

A museum showcases the station’s rich history while the accommodation allows visitors to stay on the historic grounds.
