A volunteer firefighter who was allegedly 4.84 times the legal blood alcohol limit when he crashed into wheelie bins and collided with a brick fence has been suspended from duty.

The 39-year-old man from the state’s north-west crashed into the fence at the intersection of Meredith and Darling streets in Port Sorell at around 12:15am on Monday morning.

The Tasmania Fire Service has confirmed that the man will not be returning to the brigade in the near future after he was charged with high range drink driving offences.

“It is not appropriate for us to comment further as the matter is before the courts,” the TFS said.

Police said the uninjured man was “immediately disqualified” from driving for 12 months after the incident and taken to the Devonport Police Station.

“The man was charged with drive under the influence of intoxicating liquor and drive a motor vehicle while exceeding prescribed alcohol limit,” police said

The firefighter is scheduled to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on April 3.
