A bushfire that has been burning south of Hobart for almost a week will continue “for some weeks yet”, fire authorities say.
The blaze at Snug Tiers began on January 28 and has so far burnt around 480 hectares of land.
Tasmania Fire Service Southern Region Regional Chief Simon Pilkington said the fire has been contained, but encouraged residents in the area to remain vigilant.
“It is in difficult to access terrain, so it will be continuing for some weeks yet,” he said.
“For anyone that’s been up around that area, into Pelverata Falls, it is steep, it’s inaccessible and the last fire to go through there was in 1967.”
Pilkington said up to seven dozers were used to contain the fire, including two excavators and a number of ground crews containing between 60 to 80 firefighters.
“It’s a significant response from all agencies on this fire,” he said.
A suspension on fire permits remains in place due to the increased temperatures and forecast windy weather.
“It is a lot of process behind making these decisions to suspend permits, but it’s weighted against the broader benefit for the community,” Pilkington said.
