Detailed plans for a $130 million upgrade to Launceston’s University of Tasmania (UTAS) Stadium have been unveiled, with construction expected to kick off in July.
The project, jointly funded through a 50-50 split between the Australian and Tasmanian governments, will transform the venue with a brand-new centre-west stand, expanded western seating and a modernised eastern stand.
Plans advertised for public comment by Launceston City Council on Monday also revealed a new south-east entry plaza.
If approved, the revamped stadium is expected to open its doors in early 2027.

“This is an incredible opportunity for Launceston and Northern Tasmania and will ensure UTAS Stadium remains a premiere sporting facility for our community for future generations,” Mayor Matthew Garwood said.
“The redevelopment aims to attract national sporting and entertainment events to Launceston, supporting the City of Launceston’s vision to make the city a premier business, retail and lifestyle hub.”

Stadiums Tasmania CEO James Avery said the upgrade will make a significant difference to the northern Tasmanian sports and events community.
“It will result in a host of new events coming to UTAS Stadium in addition to securing the future of those community, sporting and entertainment events that have become a mainstay on the Launceston calendar,” Avery said.
