The first designs for Launceston’s Silverdome redevelopment have been unveiled, revealing how the 40-year-old venue will be transformed through a $12 million upgrade.
The concept images show plans to boost seating capacity from 3,250 to around 4,000 for basketball and netball, while adding new corporate facilities and improved amenities.
Sport Minister Nick Duigan said the upgrade would breathe new life into the “loved but tired” venue.
The designs feature better accessibility, upgraded food and beverage areas and enhanced facilities for athletes and officials.

A key aim of the project is to meet NBL broadcasting standards, which will guarantee at least two JackJumpers games in Launceston each season.
The state government is also exploring opportunities to bring WNBL fixtures to Tasmania once the upgrades are complete.

Increasing capacity addresses one of the venue’s long-standing challenges – struggling to keep up with demand for major sporting events and concerts.
“I look forward to seeing more sport, more concerts, more events, more people and more economic benefits for northern Tasmania as a result of this upgrade,” Duigan said.
“This project will create local jobs, boost skills and capacity in the building and construction sector and contribute to our broader infrastructure goals.”
A builder will be appointed next year, with construction expected to wrap up by late 2026.

The Silverdome was constructed in 1984 and officially opened in March 1985.
