The Tasmania Devils’ new Kingston base has moved closer to reality with the release of the first construction tender for the state-of-the-art training facility and oval.

The high-performance centre will be built alongside a new shared oval, which the first tender centres around.

Acting Sport Minister Gavin Pearce said the construction would create Tasmania’s largest sporting precinct.

“This project will deliver a home for the Kingborough Tigers Football Club, something I know the community was very focussed on,” Pearce said.

“Tasmanians are getting excited about the arrival of our very own AFL and AFLW teams.”

Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt said the council had been working closely with project partners and stakeholders during the planning stage.

“This project represents a major investment in Kingborough’s sporting future and we will continue to support the project as it progresses,” Wriedt said.

“The new oval will be home for the Kingborough Tigers and an asset for the wider community.”

Tasmania Football Club General Manager Infrastructure and Commercial Michael Thorn said the club is excited to issue the first tender to market.

“The creation of Oval 3 is a key part of the overall precinct and it makes sense for us to be leading that work in conjunction with the Training and Administration facility.

The Devils are already set to debut in lower-tier competitions this year, with VFL matches starting March 21 and VFLW action beginning May 16.

Minister Pearce said the facility getting ready to be built marked a crucial milestone in preparing the teams for AFL competition.

“It is a clear sign the AFL and AFLW Devils are on the way and that we’re setting them up for success from day one,” he said.

The Devils will now lead delivery of the project, which includes broader community sporting infrastructure.
