Authorities say smoke and flames will be visible overnight as “multiple small vegetation fires” burn near Launceston’s Cataract Gorge.

Several blazes began in the Kings Bridge area on Friday afternoon, prompting a response from both firefighters on the ground and a helicopter.

“Tasmania Fire Service crews are currently on-site, working to contain and bring the fire under control,” authorities said on Friday evening.

“There is no current threat to the community however members of the public are asked to avoid the area whilst firefighting operations are occurring.”

The Launceston City Council has closed the Duck Reach Pass from the Basin through to Corin Street overnight.

The track will remain closed “until further notice” and will reopen once a safety assessment can be undertaken when conditions permit.
