Residents of Tasmania’s Furneaux Islands are facing forecast extreme bushfire conditions today as strong westerly winds drive the fire danger rating up.
The Tasmania Fire Service has issued an urgent warning with the Fire Behaviour Index reaching 40 in the region, placing it in the extreme category.
“TFS is prepared, but you have a role to play in keeping yourself and your neighbours safe,” a TFS spokesperson said.
The extreme rating, forecast only for the Furneaux Island group which includes Flinders Island, is in stark contrast to the moderate and high ratings across other Tasmanian districts.

Authorities are urging people on the islands to activate their bushfire plans immediately and ensure properties are prepared for potential threats.
“Check your bushfire plan and prepare your property,” the TFS advised.

Of particular concern are any fires lit in recent days that may reignite under today’s dangerous conditions.
“Make sure any fires lit in recent days or weeks, including fire pits and other outdoor fires, are fully extinguished. Soak it. Stir it. Soak it again,” the warning stated.
New fires are prohibited during the extreme danger period, with people instructed to report any signs of smoke or flames by calling Triple Zero immediately.
The extreme conditions are expected to ease by tomorrow, with the forecast showing a reduction to high (26) on Thursday before dropping to moderate levels for Friday and Saturday.
