Launceston’s Riverbend Park will be partially closed from 6am on Monday as part of a flood preparedness exercise.
The Taroona Street entrance to the park will be shut until mid-morning, with the exercise aimed at testing the city’s flood levee defence system.
While vehicle access in and out of the park will be impacted, the park will remain open to pedestrians.
The council says alternate parking will be available on Lindsay Street, as well as along Kings Wharf.
“The gate will be assembled and reopened as quickly as possible early on Monday with the aim of minimising disruption to motorists and neighbouring businesses,” a spokesperson said.
“The council has engaged with directly impacted businesses regarding the closure. It’s expected vehicle access into Riverbend Park will be available by mid-morning.”
Launceston’s flood levee defence system includes more than 12km of earth and concrete flood levees, 19 floodgates and a series of river level gauges in Northern river catchments.
The council undertakes regular flood readiness and training exercises for its crews, including the closure of flood gates like the Charles Street Bridge and Taroona Street every two years.
