20 to 50mm: Flood watch issued for parts of Tasmania as heavy rain looms

Parts of Tasmania are on flood watch as a low-pressure system bringing heavy rain is set to impact the state from late Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued the initial “heads up” alert for the North, North East, Huon, Derwent and South East catchments.

“Widespread rainfall totals of 20 to 50mm are forecast over the flood watch area from late Sunday into Monday, with isolated totals of 80 to 100mm possible,” the BOM said.

“Further rainfall totals of 25 to 35mm are possible across parts of flood watch area during Tuesday.”

The BOM predicts minor flooding may develop across the flood watch area from early Monday morning.

Catchments likely to be affected include the South Esk River, Macquarie River, Huon River, Channel Coastal Rivers (South East Cape to Gordon), Derwent River, Jordan River, Coal River, East Coastal Rivers (south of Bicheno) and South East.

The wet weather comes as a drop in temperatures is also expected over the weekend, with some snow forecast for peaks in the Central Highlands and South.

Saturday 13 July
Showers about the west and far south, falling as snow above 800 metres. Partly cloudy elsewhere with possible morning frost. West to southwesterly winds.

Sunday 14 July
Showers about the east, south, and west coasts, extending mostly to eastern, central and southern districts during the day, then increasing to rain about the east and southeast during the evening. Showers falling as snow above 800 metres until late afternoon. Fine otherwise, with areas of morning frost. Southerly winds, tending southeasterly during the day and becoming fresh about the east and south.

Monday 15 July
Rain about the south and east, tending to showers elsewhere. Fresh and gusty southeast to southwesterly winds.

Tuesday 16 July
Showers, mainly about the south and east, easing during the afternoon and evening. Showers falling as snow above 900 metres during the evening. South to southeasterly winds.
