Groundbreaking new sports diploma program to nurture local talent in Tasmania

The program will enhance workforce development in Tasmania's sports sector

Aspiring young Tasmanians eager to pursue careers in the sports industry will soon have the opportunity to hone their skills on home soil, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between the state’s leading sporting organizations.

The Tasmania Academy of Leadership and Sport will provide a 12-month diploma program from February 2025, offering exclusive hands-on experience across all elements of the industry, including game development, sports administration, marketing, coaching and events.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Tasmania Devils, Tasmania JackJumpers, Hobart Hurricanes and Netball Tasmania, and TasTAFE.

Education Program Manager Jesse O’Hara said the Academy is a “first of its kind in Australia” and will create a “nursery for homegrown sports administration and coaching talent”.

“The strength of this program lies in uniting multiple top sports brands, ensuring our students gain industry-wide exposure,” O’Hara said.”

Tasmania Devils, JackJumpers, Hurricanes and Netball Tasmania are key partners

TasTAFE CEO Grant Dreher said the partnership recognises the importance and value of the sports sector to Tasmania’s economy.

“Our vision is to be a key contributor to the prosperity of the State’s economy through workforce development and training,” he said.

“This partnership recognises the importance and value of the sports sector to Tasmania and we’re delighted to be the foundation education partner to help deliver those benefits.”

The program will initially launch in Hobart and expand to the north and north-west of the state in 2026.
