Several schools across Tasmania have been forced to close for the second day in a row as the after-effects of the weekend’s severe weather continue to cause disruptions.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People has confirmed five schools will remain closed on Tuesday due to flooding or power outages.
These include Exeter High School, Exeter Primary School, Glenora District School, Punchbowl Primary School and Wilmot Primary School.
Catholic Education Tasmania has confirmed that Stella Maris and Marist Regional College in Burnie and St. Brigid’s Catholic School in New Norfolk will all be open today after shutting yesterday.
“We continue to keep in our thoughts and prayers those families who have been impacted by the flooding and weather conditions,” St. Brigid’s Principal Di O’Rourke said.
“I have been advised by the Derwent Valley Council that we can open [on Tuesday].”
“The Council has said that some road closures will remain tomorrow and these may affect some families and staff. We encourage you to only travel to school if it is safe to do so.”
Thousands of homes and businesses across the state remain without power this morning.
According to TasNetworks, over 17,500 customers are currently experiencing outages across 196 incidents.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting light showers for the west and central parts of the state for the rest of Tuesday, with snow falling to 700 metres in the west in the morning.
Westerly winds are expected to turn west to northwesterly during the afternoon.
For Wednesday, fine weather is predicted statewide apart from showers developing in the north and west in the evening.
Northwesterly winds are expected to become fresh in the afternoon.
Showers are forecast for Thursday and Friday, mainly in the north and west.
Fresh northwesterly winds are expected on both days, tending westerly in the evening on Friday.
