Heavy rain has caused extensive flooding in Tasmania’s Mt Field National Park, submerging parts of the visitor facilities and swelling nearby waterfalls.
Images shared with Pulse by Rachel Power, owner of the Waterfalls Cafe and Gallery, show floodwaters engulfing picnic shelters, car parks and other facilities.
The national park in the Derwent Valley is home to the Tyenna River and Russell Falls and is located around 30 minutes from New Norfolk.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Flood Warning for the Styx and Tyenna Rivers and a Minor Flood Warning for the River Derwent and River Ouse.
Moderate rainfall with isolated heavier falls has caused river level rises and minor flooding, with moderate flooding possible at Below Meadowbank Dam overnight into Saturday.
Multiple flood peaks are likely with forecast rain in the coming days, while minor flooding may occur downstream at New Norfolk.
“Further strong cold fronts are forecast over the next few days and into next week, with moderate to heavy rainfall forecast,” the Bureau said.
“The situation is being closely monitored and warnings updated as required.”
According to Tasmania Police, the nearby Lake Dobson Road is open for 4WD and all-wheel drive vehicles only, while 2WD vehicles must have chains.
Gordon River Road is open to all traffic.
