Environmental activists have stopped a political debate between Tasmanian Liberal Leader Jeremy Rockliff and Labor Leader Rebecca White in Hobart this afternoon.
The group from the Bob Brown Foundation stormed into the room shortly after 1pm, chanting the phrase: “Forests die. We die. We cannot be silent.”
The young protesters called for an end to native forest logging, holding up a large banner in front of the two political leaders.
During the protest, debate moderator Alex Johnston lightened the mood with laughter, saying “everyone knows the words now so you can join in” as the group continued their chant.
Johnston then encouraged the protesters to move along.
Throughout the debate organised by the Property Council, Labor Leader Rebecca White focused on the cost of living and party policies, while Liberal Leader Jeremy Rockliff emphasised his party’s focus on infrastructure improvements.
Polls commissioned by the Australia Institute show the Liberals leading with 37.1% support in this state election, though they are likely to fall short of a majority government.
