Former federal Liberal MP Bridget Archer has announced she will seek preselection to contest the Bass electorate in Tasmania’s upcoming state election.

Archer, who lost her federal seat of Bass to Labor’s Jess Teesdale in May, made the announcement alongside Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff today.

The decision comes amid political turmoil in Tasmania after Premier Rockliff lost a no-confidence vote in parliament, triggered by Labor leader Dean Winter with support from the Greens.

“I have spent the last few days absolutely appalled with the shenanigans that have been played out by Dean Winter in the State Parliament,” Archer said.

“An utterly disgraceful display of self-interest and a grab for power with no credible alternative in place either, no credible alternative pathway for Tasmania going forward.”

Archer, who previously served as mayor of George Town before entering federal politics, said she felt more motivated than ever to return to the political arena.

“If we have to be having an election because of the selfish actions of Dean Winter, then I am absolutely prepared to put myself forward for pre-selection to stand as a member of Jeremy Rockliff’s team,” she said.

Premier Rockliff welcomed Archer’s decision, describing her as “experienced” and “a fighter” who understands “the importance of being part of Team Tasmania.”

“The reason why we are heading to an election is because of Dean Winter joining with the Greens to blow up the Tasmanian Parliament when Tasmania is well and truly punching above its weight.”

“Jeremy Rockliff has a choice to make. He needs to listen to the business leaders of Tasmania who are asking him to go. Otherwise, he’s taking Tasmania to an election they do not want and do not need.”

“Tasmanians do not want their assets privatised, they want their budget fixed and they want their Spirit of Tasmania to come home.”

“He should do the right thing and just resign.”

The election is expected to be called after emergency bills are passed in parliament on Tuesday.
