Tasmanian prisons are ramping up security with the introduction of full-body scanners.

The scanners, part of a $1.3 million election promise, will be installed at the Hobart Reception Prison, Mary Hutchinson Women’s Prison, Risdon Prison Complex and the Launceston Reception Prison.

Corrections Minister Madeleine Ogilvie said the scanners will provide “another tool to keep contraband like drugs, weapons and mobile phones out” of prisons.

She said they will also enhance the safety of staff and inmates.

“These scanners will enable the detection of objects on or inside a person’s body and clothing without the need for clothing removal or physical searching,” she said.

Staff at the Hobart Reception Prison have already received training in radiation safety and image analysis to enable the use of the scanners in daily operations.
