A social media video showcasing a ‘genius’ Australia Day BBQ hack, filmed by the river in Southern Tasmania’s Huon Valley, has gone viral.
In the clip posted by Amanda McIntosh, a spit roast skewer was connected to a DIY water wheel made of thongs, using the river’s current to turn the meat over a fire.
The video quickly gained popularity on TikTok, receiving over 1 million views and hundreds of comments from around the world.
McIntosh, who filmed the video at Rivers Edge in Lonnavale west of Huonville, told Pulse that she was ‘very impressed’ with the makeshift spit, which was crafted by nearby campers.

However, some commenters were quick to raise concerns about the potential danger associated of such a setup, citing the risk of river rocks potentially exploding.
“Just be careful, river rock holds water and heating causes massive stream pressure within [the] rock. I have seen them shatter and cover people in hot shard,” one commenter said.
