The Glenorchy City Council has given the green light to a new multi-million-dollar sports and recreation facility that will bring four full-sized indoor courts to Claremont.

The $28 million Glenorchy Sports Centre will tackle what councillors have called an urgent community need for more sporting infrastructure.

Planned for 61 Claremont Link Road, right at the entrance to Claremont College, the new centre will cater for netball, basketball, futsal, volleyball and wheelchair sports.

The state government facility is designed to serve athletes from right across Tasmania under one roof.

Deputy Mayor Russell Yaxley, who chaired Monday’s planning authority meeting, said the project would be a major boost for the community and had been a long time coming.

“This is a great facility and it’s something that I know the council and everyone around the table here are certainly excited about,” Yaxley said.

“We’re not excited for us, but we’re excited for our community.”

Alongside the indoor multi-sport courts, the centre will feature a dedicated show court, change rooms, parent and sensory rooms and a registered changing places facility.

Up to 600 spectators will be able to watch games from a mix of fixed and portable seating, with around 300 seats overlooking the show court.

Administrative spaces will include a welcoming foyer, reception, office space and a kiosk, while three multi-purpose meeting and event rooms will provide flexible areas for gatherings and club activities.

The approval comes with 15 conditions and follows detailed traffic assessments to address concerns about vehicle access along Claremont Link Road.

The site will include 68 car parking spaces, with three DDA-compliant bays, two electric vehicle charging stations, a dedicated drop-off and loading zone, plus motorbike parking and bike racks.
