Alderman Kelly Sims has been removed from her position on the Glenorchy City Council after failing to attend three consecutive council meetings.

Council General Manager Tony McMullen confirmed that the seat is now vacant and has notified the Tasmanian Electoral Commissioner accordingly as required by the Local Government Act 1993.

“The legislation stipulates that the office of a councillor becomes vacant if they are absent without leave from three consecutive ordinary meetings of council,” McMullen said.

“Schedule 5 of the Act leaves council with no choice but to inform Ald. Sims that her office is now vacant and proceed as directed by the electoral commission to fill that vacancy.”

McMullen said that the matter was discussed privately in last nights council meeting and he will not comment further as it would not be “lawful, fair, or appropriate’.

“I would like to thank Ald. Sims for her contribution to the Glenorchy City Council, and wish her the best in her future endeavours.”

In January, Sims was suspend from council for three months for “bullying” two local business people on social media.

A code of conduct report found her behaviour was “completely unacceptable” and amounted to “bullying and harassing conduct”.

Sims refused to take part in the code of conduct process, arguing it was “corrupt”.
