The redevelopment of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool has reached its halfway point, with construction now 50% complete.
The Glenorchy City Council announced the milestone this week, marking significant progress on the $5 million repair project that aims to reopen the pool after it was shut down in July 2023.
The pool was closed indefinitely after inspectors found serious electrical faults, structural problems and a shell leaking an estimated 35,000 litres of water daily.
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said reaching the halfway point was an exciting moment for the community.
“The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool is more than just a swimming pool – it’s part of our city’s story,” she said.

“Seeing the redevelopment reach 50% completion is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the strong progress being made on site.”
Hutchinson Builders, who began work in late July 2025, are delivering the project.
Major works are now well advanced across the pool shell, access ramp, changeroom and amenities building, plant room and supporting infrastructure.
Preparation is also underway for the installation of a changing places accessible change facility.
The upgraded pool will feature improved accessibility, better amenities and enhanced sustainability measures including a new solar-boosted heating system.

“The redevelopment reflects council’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that makes lives better for residents of all ages and abilities,” Hickey said.
The closure devastated many locals, with a Facebook group attracting more than 1,100 members and a petition garnering similar numbers calling for the pool to be saved.
The state government provided $5 million to fund the interim repairs, while the council continues lobbying for $84 million to eventually build a modern aquatic facility.
No specific reopening date has been announced, but the council says it will provide further updates as work progresses toward completion.
