The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool will reopen on October 1 as the long-closed facility in Hobart’s north nears the end of a $5 million rebuild.

Mayor Sue Hickey confirmed the opening date at a special council meeting on Monday, saying the redevelopment was on track to reopen on time and on budget.

Head contract works are now 90% complete.

“Crews have been working through challenging conditions to keep the pool redevelopment project on track with significant progress made across the site in recent weeks,” she said.

The pool has been shut since July 2023, when it was found to have electrical faults, structural issues and a shell leaking an estimated 35,000 litres of water a day.

The pool was first due to reopen in December 2025 before that was pushed back to mid-2026.

Hickey said the council was already planning the public opening and wanted to hear from locals.

“Our events team has started to plan what the public opening on the 1st of October will look like and are keen to hear any ideas from the public,” she said.

Hutchinson Builders is carrying out the work. Once the site is handed back, the council will finish the landscaping and final touches.

The reopening will come at a cost to ratepayers.

Running the revamped pool will cost about $700,000 a year, a figure the council says helped push its 2026-27 rate rise to 5.4%, up from the 4.95% first proposed.
