Glenorchy mayor Bec Thomas has been elected to the Upper House seat of Elwick after winning the weekend’s election as an independent.

Thomas secured 53.34% of the Legislative Council vote, defeating Labor candidate Tessa McLaughlin.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission confirmed Thomas’s provisional win with a lead of 1,221 votes over McLaughlin, who was left with 46.66% of the final tally.

Final results are expected to be released on Tuesday, May 14, according to the TEC.

Thomas’s win will prompt a by-election for the soon-to-be vacant mayoral seat on the Glenorchy City Council.

The previous Elwick seat holder, Labor’s Josh Willie, vacated it after securing a seat in the House of Assembly during the state election.

In another upcoming by-election, it is likely that Sorell will also need a new mayor, with the Liberal candidate Kerry Vincent in a strong position to win in Prosser.

Former Greens leader Cassy O’Connor is expected to secure a win in Hobart over Hobart City Councillor John Kelly.
